The Autumn Leaves - Ernie Kalwa Quartet

The Ernie Kalwa Quartet

DEBUT CD Release – 2006

The
Autumn Leaves

Autumn is a time of vibrant colours.  Vibrant too are the colours of
Jazz.  For the first time on CD, Ernie Kalwa and his Quartet make their
debut with this popular collection of jazz standards.  Having played
professionally throughout Ontario for over fifteen years, they’ve
assembled some of their favourite requests into an enjoyable mix of
Swing, Latin, and a ballad thrown in for good measure.  Timeless
classics create the perfect programme and a sparkling atmosphere for any
occasion.

The leader and founder of the Royal City Saxophone Quartet, Ernie is a graduate of the University of Waterloo in Mathematics and Music.  A native of Peterborough , Ontario , Ernie now calls Elora home.  He studied piano briefly from the age of eight, and became more serious at age 12 when he picked up the saxophone.  He played his first professional gig at 14, and was active in dance bands, concert bands, Dixieland, R&B, and saxophone quartets.  Saving up his paper-route money, he bought his first tenor sax on his 16th birthday with some help from his dad – Ernie Sr.  He studied saxophone at Humber College with Pat LaBarbera, and later in North Carolina with James Houlik.  He has played in numerous bands and has traveled to many jazz events and festivals throughout the United States and Canada .  His many influences include Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Sonny Stitt, and Hank Mobley.

Ernie has served several terms as President of the Central Ontario Musicians’ Association (Kitchener Local 226 of the American Federation of Musicians), and is a competitive fly-fisherman.  In June 2006, Ernie finished as one of the top ten Canadian fly-anglers in the 4th National Fly-Fishing Championships held on the Grand River and Conestoga Rivers .
